Book DesignAlternative Publication Experiential Design“The Nexus of The Strange, The Intimate, and The Web”&nbsp;was born from late nights on Omegle connecting with 40-year-old men as an isolated 12-year-old in the middle of Tennessee. Emotional intimacy is complicated. The boundaries separating public versus private have become even more blurred since the rise of social media. “The Nexus of The Strange, The Intimate, and The Web” serves as a tool for readers to question intimacy, its invasive nature, and to who we reserve our most intimate moments. divided into two explorations- a categorization of encounters with strangers on Facebook groups and a deconstruction of the sacrament of penance. Across five Facebook groups embracing intimacy and the conceptual “stranger”, three invasive questions were asked: “What is your biggest fear?”, “What is your biggest regret?”, and “What do you want to do before you die?”. The project took off unexpectedly, receiving over one hundred responses. Responses were categorized into six universal human themes- “Birth, Life”, “(Fear of) Death”, “Companionship”, “Loneliness”, “Love”, and “Loss”. The process was obsessive and for the pages with facebook responses involved jamming the inky marker through the stencil letter by letter, purposefully letting the stencil smear the responses until the page was done. Only then, was the stencil washed- much like a confessional where being clean is conditional.I chose the visual of the stencil because of similarity to the confessional booth- both private and public. A computer font was later made from the resulting imagery using image-trace in Adobe Illustrator. This was used as a primary typeface for “The Nexus”. Penance (also known as confession) is a sacrament that often fills Catholics with a lifetime of guilt and paranoia. In recent years, confession has become a subversive and public act. With apps like Whisper, Yikyak, and threads such as “Am I the Asshole”, confessing one’s secrets and revealing oneself intimately has never been more performative. Within the Bible in Roman Catholicism, Leviticus is often used as a reference point for rites and punishments. Using the idea of censorship and the screen of the confessional booth as a visual device, I created blackout poetry of Leviticus passages containing confession. Blackout poetry serves as a tool to shine a light on some of the absurdity of violence within the book. Then, these sections of strained Leviticus were used as verbal prompts for Artificial Intelligence image generation. It must be noted that AI was only used as a method of translation not for any original design or creative endeavors. AI was only used because of the projects’ ties to algorithms and technology. Confession is a severely human endeavor- something AI cannot understand. I found it wildly interestering for it to interpret these themes.&nbsp; All imagery in the book was created by me and from me. This work was made in May of 2022 when the issue of training AI was not as prevalant. It must be noted, that AI was used in the project as an inkblot test and not used to develop the final images.Six of these traslated sketches became chapter headings. Strained Leviticus from blackout poetry was then rearranged, creating a new mythos about confession, equally as dark in imagery. Within the myth, the names Asifa (feminization of Asif) and Ardea reference Abrahamic faiths. However, in a way to create timelessness, the deity is titled “The Anointed”. “The Nexus” is wide in its scope of exploration, however, when all is said and done, it must be acknowledged that one artist can never truly create something universal. The duck as an animal represents emotion and water energy, helping navigate intuition and intention. The rubber duck has been blown up recently in the US and in China, used to represent democracy. In China, it’s been used to protest tanks and other weaponization, and in Brazil, the symbol is used to protest the corrupt administration of President Dilma Rousseff. Here, the symbol is co-opted to represent a wider group of people, one whose voice is often washed away. Campaign Video Using Audio from the US-Mexico Border︎︎︎ The RDC or Rubber Duck Co’s voice is edgy, artsy, and bold. It stands out from different brands that call you to action through their dynamic graphics, overlays, and strong symbolism. The postcard collection gives the public not only a chance to interact with the brand but also mail their local politian about their feelings of people being forced apart at the border and the ongoing refugee crisis. the Metropolitan Transit Authority’s budget crisis for the New York Public Interest Research Group’s (NYPIRG) Straphangers Campaign. &nbsp;This campaign advocates for riders rather than the MTA, speaking for those that already can’t afford the fare as is.&nbsp;Problem:Not enough people know about the budget crisis the MTA undergoes, how poorly their money is spent, and the economic disparities this brings upon the riders. A universal experience, “Who’s Due” aims to bring the player back into this forgotten liminal space. Based on the medical syndrome, known as “vanishing twin syndrome”, this game viscerally creates a natal experience. I created “Who’s Due” with my creative partner, Xiangying Fang. “Who’s Due” will be on display for play at the arcade and bar WonderVille in Brooklyn, New York in February. <img width="4032" height="3024" width_o="4032" height_o="3024" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a84dad63a6728f980b763cd0208d64ac0f6894e31669f60eb29df94470411db5/whos3.png" data-mid="224758353" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a84dad63a6728f980b763cd0208d64ac0f6894e31669f60eb29df94470411db5/whos3.png" />Together, a total of 48 hours was spent sewing together recycled fabrics from teddy bears, thrifted shirts, and scraps to create an insulated two layer 5” x 5” x 2” sack. Then, the sack was wired and coded so that two lights with three locations would go off in a random sequence that were sewn into the inside of the “womb”. Once a button was pressed, the second location of lights would appear, and so on. Once a “twin” (who is fixated to another via umbilical cord or crocheted belt) presses a button 10 times, the game is won, the winning twin is the survivor. <img width="1448" height="1090"
